![]() The significance of this is that in modern times the event has been homed in on as the marker par excellence of the beginning of China’s decline, a victim to Western imperialism and forceful arm-twisting. ![]() Nevertheless, what the author - a professor of Chinese at London University who conducted research in both Cambridge and Beijing - sets out to do is to present the first Opium War (1839-1842) in all its complexity and detail. She concentrates on the first of the two Opium Wars fought by the British against elements of the Chinese Empire - “elements” because she comments that at one stage the emperor wasn’t really convinced that something as momentous as a war was actually taking place. ![]() ![]() This double-sidedness is at the heart of Julia Lovell’s The Opium War, though not as applied to opium itself. People are never likely to agree on the status of opium, except for the fact that it’s the most effective natural pain-killer known to mankind. Bejeweled jade pipes, silver lamps for heating, red sandalwood couches and claims of mind-opening pleasure compete with an image of addiction and lassitude, and the engine for foreign domination. ![]()

![]() ![]() Sometimes Bridge feels like she's being left behind. Tab is embracing feminism by way of a human rights club she's joined (and seems to have a little bit of a crush on her club's activist advisor). What's saved her is the support and love of her best friends, Emily and Tabitha (Tab for short). At times, a busy street, a honking horn, or even a tough decision can still paralyze Bridge with fear and flashbacks. Not out of some abstract existentialist impulse, though, but because she is genuinely lucky to be alive after being hit by a car five years earlier. Most of the novel is told from the point of view of Bridge Barsamian, a seventh-grader who asks herself every day why she's alive. Rebecca Stead generously and thoughtfully addresses all these changes in Goodbye Stranger. If there is one strength that makes this film so memorable, it is how it looks.ĭirected by Francis Ford Coppola, Bram Stoker’s Dracula is essentially a horror film but is not marked by the standard tropes of that genre, instead feeling more like a tormented love story with lots of toothy bloodletting, as surely intended, as Dracula ( Gary Oldman) denounces God and his faith after his beloved Elisabeta ( Winona Ryder) commits suicide after falsely being told of her lover’s death in battle, knowing she is condemned to damnation. These effects help illustrate the strange and ethereal feel of the complex story, giving the film its fantastical tone and helping to create a fable-like atmosphere. Bram Stoker’s Dracula paints this tale with some beautifully impressive visual effects that are so well made, most believe they are computer-generated. The tragedy of the Dracula story is of course the love story behind it. A modest box office hit, it has become a cult favorite. A visionary masterpiece, it was hailed by critics for its production but faulted for some of its casting.
